Tips before you rent a car in colombia

Many of our clients have suggested in our surveys, to have this type of vital information for you, whether you are a tourist or business person, national or foreign, with the intention to set your experience in Renting a Car in Colombia as Secure and Pleasant as possible. This way you could make an informed decision when selecting what type of Car Rental Agency to choose from in Colombia.

1. Verify that the Car Rental Agency is registered and certified by the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Tourism, thus the LAW in Colombia requires that all the companies that serves tourism should be registered and Certified, this applies to all Car Rental business in Colombia. Please click in the link below: http://minturismo.mincomercio.gov.co/prestadores/prestadores_report_2.asp just type the name of the agency in ESCRIBA NOMBRE, you should see their information and their status, either active or inactive.
2. Be sure that the Car Rental Agency HAS and offers you Commercial Car Rental Insurance policy, not just verbally but have it written of printed in their contracts. In Colombia is ILLEGAL to misinformed the Insurance Companies about a claim; many of the fraudulent agencies will ask you to lie in case of an accident, by asking you to say that the car you rented was actually loaned by a friend. That is totally illegal and can put you in risk with Colombia’s law. Save the trouble.
3. Next you will need to know what kind of coverage the Car Rental Agency has for you; like deductibles in case of an accident, liability insurance to third parties and most important (loss of profit) in Spanish (lucro cesante), this occurs when the car is in the shop for repair, who pays for those days.
4. Make sure that the Car Rental Agency HAS a REAL office with a commercial address, most of them deal from their home, but they publish service coverage in many cities by listing only the cell phones, without having just one real office. Please be aware that is no sufficient to find their listings in the yellow pages or if they have a website, most of them do, but is a way to mislead you to believe that they are legal. There is no regulation to advertise in Colombia.
   
5. Also when you get the contracts and paper work form the Car Rental agency, make sure the it contains all of their information, such as: Name of the company with legal address and local phone, as well as the NIT (a unique serial number use for registration in the Chamber of Commerce)
   
6. Don’t accept to meet with the staff of the Renta Car business in other places than its office, the Hotel of your choice or any public place well known, for the delivery of the vehicle, specially on long term rents and when cash payment is involved. Be Careful!
